What is a Grease Trap?

A grease trap is a plumbing device which is designed to collect greases and other solids before entry into a wastewater disposal system. Common in the restaurant and foodservice industry in kitchens, most places in the world require such an interceptor device to hold grease before it enters sewers. Also known as a grease interceptor, grease recovery device, grease capsule or grease converter, these devices have been in use since the Victorian times in mind to reduce the amount of fats, oils and greases (FOGs) that enter sewers. Such systems only have kitchen waste water flowing through them and aren’t part of another drainage system, comprising of boxes within the drain run that flows between the sinks and the sewage system.

Why are Grease Traps Important?

Grease traps are play a vital function in the reduction of FOGs in the sewage system. When such substances enter into septic tanks and other treatment facilities, a floating scum layer is formed. This scum layer is gradually digester and broken down by microorganisms as part of the anaerobic digestion process. The problem with FOG from food preparation in restaurants is that it can cause the release of untreated sewage into the environment. There becomes a problem particularly with high-viscosity fats and cooking grease such as lard, which solidify when cooled, and combined with other disposed solids can block drain pipes. Blocked drainpipes can also cause overflows of municipal sewers, and can generally disrupt wastewater utility operations and increase the need for operations and maintenance.

Grease Trap Emptying

The waste from passive grease traps is called brown grease, which includes rotted food solids along with FOGs. Yellow grease, on the other hand, refers simply to the oils. It is necessary to empty and clean grease traps. In order to dispose of this grease, it is pumped from traps by grease pumping trucks. Brown grease I mostly disposed of at landfill sites, but more recent developments mean recycling can be possible. Here at Bridmin Tankers Ltd, we offer grease trap emptying to companies across the UK, from our base in the Midlands. We provide grease trap emptying options with the aim to be affordable, efficient, and compliant with relevant legislation.
